Running pace is the time it takes to run 1 km (min/km), calculated as pace = total time ÷ distance (km).
Enter a distance and goal time to see your pace per km, speed (km/h), and split times all at once.

Split times assume an even pace and are an estimate for reference. Real times vary with course, temperature, and condition.
How to use
- Pick a distance — choose 5K, 10K, half, or full marathon, or enter a custom distance in km.
- Enter goal time — enter your goal finish time in hours, minutes, and seconds.
- See results — press Calculate to see your pace per km (min/km), speed (km/h), and split times.
How to calculate running pace (formula)
Running pace is the time it takes to run 1 km, shown as minutes:seconds (min/km). With just distance and goal time, you can find it directly:
- Pace (min/km) = total time (min) ÷ distance (km)
- Speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ total time (h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km)
- Finish time = pace (min/km) × distance (km)
| Goal | Finish time | Required pace | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sub-3 | 3:00:00 | ~4:16 /km | ~14.1 km/h |
| Sub-3:30 | 3:30:00 | ~4:59 /km | ~12.1 km/h |
| Sub-4 | 4:00:00 | ~5:41 /km | ~10.5 km/h |
| Sub-4:30 | 4:30:00 | ~6:24 /km | ~9.4 km/h |
| Sub-5 | 5:00:00 | ~7:07 /km | ~8.4 km/h |
For example, to finish 10K in 50 minutes, your pace is 50 ÷ 10 = 5 min/km and speed is 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. To predict another distance from an existing result, use the Marathon Race Time Predictor; to convert treadmill speed and pace, use the Treadmill Pace Converter. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is running pace?
Running pace is the time it takes to run 1 km, shown as minutes:seconds (min/km). For example, a pace of 6:00 means you run 1 km in 6 minutes, and a faster pace is a smaller number. Pace = total time ÷ distance (km).
How do I convert pace to speed (km/h)?
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). For example, a pace of 6 min/km equals 60 ÷ 6 = 10 km/h. To go the other way, pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed.
Exactly how long is a full marathon in km?
The official full marathon distance is 42.195 km, and a half marathon is exactly half, 21.0975 km. This calculator uses 42.195 km for the full and 21.0975 km for the half by default, and you can also enter a custom distance.
What pace is sub-3 or sub-4 marathon?
A sub-3 marathon (under 3 hours) needs about 4:16 /km, sub-4 (under 4 hours) about 5:41 /km, and sub-5 (under 5 hours) about 7:07 /km. That is 42.195 km divided by your goal time.
